Kashan
An Afghan Kashan center medallion rug, knotted by hand in northern Afghanistan with hand-carded, hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool. Very fine weave.
An extraordinary work of woven art inspired by the weaving traditions of central Persia, where Kashan became renowned under Safavid patronage in the sixteenth century for exceptionally refined carpets, including magnificent central medallion compositions. Revived in the great Kashan workshops of the late nineteenth century, these classic Persian rug designs combined grand medallions, flowering vines, palmettes, and contrasting corner spandrels, creating some of the most admired carpets of the Persian weaving tradition.
