An Afghan Kazak rug, knotted by hand with hand-carded, hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool, woven by master weavers in northern Afghanistan.

Kazak rugs come from the village-weaving traditions of the western Transcaucasus, especially present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, where rural communities developed a bold geometric language of stars, hooked forms, animals, plants, and traditional geometric motifs. Their designs preserve older Caucasian and broader Near Eastern elements while also reflecting centuries of exchange with Persian floral and medallion traditions. This Akstafa design takes its name from the village of Akstafa, near the historic Kazak district of present-day Azerbaijan, although many surviving nineteenth-century examples have the structural characteristics of rugs woven in the Kuba-Shirvan region of the eastern Caucasus. Akstafa rugs became known for bold geometric medallions accompanied by pairs of large stylized fan-tailed birds, often referred to as peacocks, surrounded by rosettes, animals, hooked forms, and other small geometric motifs. Their vigorous drawing and lively, highly individual compositions made Akstafa rugs one of the most distinctive expressions of nineteenth-century Caucasian village weaving.
