We welcome you to Kalyani Rugs, a gallery of hand-knotted rugs in Grass Valley, California. Every rug we carry is chosen by hand, for its beauty, its craftsmanship, and the story woven into it. Our gallery offers a curated collection, rather than a warehouse inventory: it’s a place to browse, to learn, and to find the extraordinary rug that belongs in your home.
We believe a rug isn’t just a beautiful object. It represents months of skilled work and generations of cultural meaning. That belief shapes everything we do, the rugs we source, the weaving communities we support, and the way we treat everyone in the chain that brings a rug from the loom to your room.

Our Vision
We carry forward the philosophy we have resonated with along our entire rug journey: that a rug gallery can be a force for good. Proceeds from our rugs help support weaving projects in Afghanistan and India, where that income reaches the weavers and their communities directly.
We believe in the fair trade model, where everyone in a rug’s journey is treated with respect and integrity, from the shepherds to the wool spinners and dyers, to the weavers, the importers, ourselves, and you. Many of the weavers work in politically and economically vulnerable circumstances, and they deserve care and compassion. When you bring one of these rugs home, you become part of that stream of mutual support, and part of keeping a centuries-old art alive.
We’re so glad you’ve found your way to us, and we hope our rugs, and the stories behind them, enrich you with beauty and meaning for years to come.

Our Story
Origins
1990s
Our rug journey began in the 1990s, living in Europe and traveling. We encountered extraordinary hand-knotted rugs, and fell in love with them. It wasn’t only their beauty; what intrigued us was learning about the cultures that wove them, and the sense that each rug carried the spirit of the hands and the place it came from.

When we moved to California, that fascination, and our small collection, came with us. In Nevada City, we found ourselves buying rugs at a shop called The Magic Carpet. Little did we know how significant our connection with this special store would become.
The Magic Carpet
2012-2025
In 2012, Paul and Eileen Jorgensen, who had founded and run The Magic Carpet for more than three decades, were preparing to retire. We couldn’t bear to see it simply close, so we offered a plan to keep it going, and in time we became partners in the shop.

For thirteen years we were blessed to be surrounded by extraordinary beauty and people, and to help support the weavers and their communities. When The Magic Carpet finally closed its doors in 2025, we carried its legacy with us.

Caravan Rug Shows
2025-2026

One thing was certain: our journey with rugs wasn’t over. A new and exciting chapter began! We built a new rug collection and took it on the road, offering caravan rug shows to northern California foothill communities.

We learned three things. First, that people were captivated by the beauty of the rugs, and their stories, everywhere we went. Second, that the desire for a new brick and mortar shop was a common thread. Again and again, people asked when we might open a store. And third, that hauling several hundred rugs from show to show was really, really hard.
Our Grass Valley Home
Present
In early 2026, we wandered into the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce, just curious about what retail might look like for us in town. They connected us with a local realtor who happened to know of a charming space. It was perfect! Two months later, Kalyani Rugs opened its doors.

Today, when visiting our gallery, you’ll find a unique collection of beautiful hand-knotted rugs, woven from hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool, each an expression of cultural legacy. We hope you’ll take your time, explore, learn, and find a work of woven art that becomes part of your own journey. We look forward to seeing you soon!
