Antique Konaghend
An Antique Caucasian Keyhole Konaghend rug, knotted by hand with hand-spun wool. Circa 1900.
Associated with the eastern Caucasian Kuba weaving tradition, Konaghend rugs belong to a group noted for intricate geometric compositions and unusually precise drawing. The distinctive keyhole form belongs to a much wider Caucasian design history, closely related to the monumental gateway medallions of Sewan Kazak rugs, with earlier parallels in Anatolian re-entrant or “Bellini” carpet designs, reflecting the movement and transformation of geometric forms across regional weaving traditions. Worn condition, superb drawing.
