Antique Lesghi Star Kuba
An Antique Caucasian Lesghi Star Kuba rug, knotted by hand with wool. Circa 1920.
Woven in the Kuba district of the eastern Caucasus, in present-day Azerbaijan, where village weavers were known for finely spun yarn, dense knotting, and precise geometric drawing. The distinctive Lesghi Star became a characteristic medallion of nineteenth-century Kuba weaving, although related forms also appear elsewhere in the eastern Caucasus and in earlier Anatolian rugs, reflecting the long movement of designs between regional weaving traditions. In this example, the main medallions are surrounded by endless knots, small geometric rosettes and two stylized guard dogs below. Worn condition.
