An Antique Caucasian Shirvan Konaghend rug, knotted by hand with hand-carded, hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool. Circa 1900.

Rugs from the carpet-weaving village of Konaghend belong to the finely woven Kuba-Shirvan tradition of the eastern Caucasus, where weavers developed intricate geometric carpets using finely spun wool and dense knotting. This example belongs to the distinctive geometric medallion tradition, in which a monumental stepped cross-shaped medallion organizes the field amid smaller stylized emblematic and geometric devices. Woven during the great flowering of Caucasian village carpet production around the turn of the twentieth century, Konaghend rugs embody the distinctive geometry and dynamic natural color play that distinguish this remarkable weaving tradition. Very good condition, minor maintenance repairs, slight loss to end, and low even pile.
