Antique Kuba
An Antique Caucasian Kuba rug, knotted by hand with hand-spun wool. Circa 1900.
Woven in the Kuba district of the eastern Caucasus, in present-day Azerbaijan, where culturally diverse village weavers produced some of the finest Caucasian rugs of the nineteenth century. Kuba weavers drew upon older Persian and Caucasian floral traditions, transforming curvilinear blossoms, bird-like leaves and palmettes into the crisp, angular forms characteristic of eastern Caucasian weaving. This ivory-ground all-over geometric floral design belongs to a well-documented Kuba tradition of repeating geometricized flowers and lotuses, framed by the intricate multiple borders for which these finely woven village rugs are particularly admired. Superior condition with low even pile.
