Ferahan Sorouk
A center medallion Ferahan Sarouk rug, knotted by hand by master weavers in India with hand-carded, hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool.
Inspired by the distinguished weaving tradition of Sarouk, a village in the Farahan district of west-central Persia, where finely woven carpets developed within the broader Arak and Sultanabad carpet-producing region. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, expanding European and American markets encouraged new workshop production and increasingly elaborate floral designs, while maintaining the sturdy construction of the region’s village weaving. By the early twentieth century, center-medallion compositions had become an important part of the Sarouk tradition, alongside the floral sprays and rich grounds for which later Sarouk carpets became especially well known. Woven through the Zamin project in northern India, this rug continues traditional hand-knotting methods using hand-processed, vegetable-dyed wool, part of the broader work of the Barakat cultural survival organization, linking fine carpet weaving with support for weaving communities.
