Mahal
A very fine weave Afghan Mahal rug, knotted by hand with hand-carded, hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool, woven by master weavers in northern Afghanistan. 169 knots per square inch.
This design is inspired by the village weaving traditions of west-central Persia where Mahal carpets flourished during the great expansion of the Sultanabad carpet industry in the nineteenth century. Their blend of traditional Persian design with spacious, open drawing created a style that has remained popular for over 150 years. The interpretation in this rug transforms the Mahal style into a highly refined contemporary design.
